Organizations & Charities Heath Supported

"I've been involved in quite a few campaigns, . . . but I feel silly just talking about the money that I've donated.  I don't feel like you've really done anything until you go out and hand feed the world. . . . I don't believe one person, or an actor can save the world, but I'd like to do my part."     ~ Heath Ledger

The David Wirrpanda Foundation

David Wirrpanda Foundation

Heath was an Ambassador for the The David Wirrpanda Foundation, started by his friend and West-Coast Eagles footballer, David Wirrpanda.

From their website:

The David Wirrpanda Foundation exists to Improve the Life Outcomes of Indigenous Children by promoting strong role models and healthy life choices. 2005 saw the launch of the David Wirrpanda Foundation through the support of Woodside Energy Ltd as founding sponsor.

The focus is to:

• Increase the retention of indigenous students in school,

• Improve the health of Indigenous children, and

• Improve their life choices after leaving school by encouraging further study or entry into the workforce.

Since commencing operations in 2005, the Foundation has established successful programs in Perth and in the Pilbara and attendance and behaviour has improved.

Mentoring by West Coast Eagles footballer David Wirrpanda, former Fremantle footballer Troy Cook, member of the West Coast Fever Netball

team Bianca Franklin and other indigenous role models are an important part of the Foundation’s work.

The Foundation has established strong links with the communities in which it operates as well as obtaining funding from sponsors and government sources.

Major sponsors of the Foundation include founding sponsor Woodside Energy, Rio Tinto, Pilbara Development Commission, the West Coast

Eagles Supporter’s Club, Lotterywest and Commonwealth Grants.

The Foundation programs are funded under the National Community Crime Prevention Programme.

The Foundation now plans to build on these successes by expanding its operations in Perth and the Pilbara.

Toys for Tots Christmas Drive

Sponsored by K-mart & Motorola  (2001)

Heath at Toys for Tots Christmas Charity 2001

Heath was often involved in charities that helped children, even anonymously volunteering at Perth hospitals dressed as a clown or mime to entertain the terminally ill children.  The Toys for Tots Christmas drive in 2001 was just another example of his dedication to helping kids.

Oxfam International

  Oxfam International

Oxfam International's Mission Statement

Oxfam International is an international group of independent non-governmental organizations dedicated to fighting poverty and related injustice around the world. The Oxfams work together internationally to achieve greater impact by their collective efforts.

Oxfam believes that:
  1. Poverty and powerlessness are avoidable and can be eliminated by human action and political will.
  2. Basic human needs and rights can be met. These include the rights to a sustainable livelihood, and the rights and capacities to participate in societies and make positive changes to people's lives.
  3. Inequalities can be significantly reduced both between rich and poor nations and within nations.
  4. Peace and substantial arms reduction are essential conditions for development.
Oxfam understands that:
  1. Poverty is a state of powerlessness in which people are unable to exercise their basic human rights or control virtually any aspect of their lives. Poverty manifests itself in the inadequacy of material goods and lack of access to basic services and opportunities leading to a condition of insecurity.
  2. All poverty is almost always rooted in human action or inaction. It can be made worse by natural calamities, and human violence, oppression and environmental destruction. It is maintained by entrenched inequalities and institutional and economic mechanisms.
The Oxfam approach is that:
  1. Our programs will:
    • address the structural causes of poverty and related injustice
    • work primarily through local accountable organizations, seeking to strengthen their empowerment
    • help people directly where local capacity is insufficient or inappropriate for Oxfam's purposes
    • assist the development of structures which directly benefit people facing the realities of poverty and injustice and which are accountable to them.
  2. In all our actions our ultimate goal is to enable people to exercise their rights and manage their own lives.
  3. For people to be able to exercise their rights:
    • opportunities must be created so people can participate in governing all aspects of their lives, and
    • they must have the genuine capacity to organize and take advantage of those opportunities.
  4. Gender inequalities and other diversity issues will be addressed in our actions and programs.
  5. In the economic arena, we will seek:
    • to enable people to meet their needs by creating opportunities within markets, while protecting themselves against the excesses of unregulated market forces
    • to strengthen institutions intervening in the market in the interests of the poor.
  6. Preventing and reversing damage to the environment is essential to achieving sustainable livelihoods.
  7. Action against violence must include:
    • coming to the aid of victims
    • strengthening people's capacity to peacefully resolve conflicts
    • demanding a determined response from the international community where the situation warrants it.

Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn

Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn

When Heath & Michelle moved into their Brooklyn neighborhood to settle down and raise their upcoming daughter, they both joined the Advisory Board of the Develop-Don't Destroy Brooklyn organization.  The current fight of DDDB is to oppose the abuse of eminent domain laws by a billionaire developer who has used his connections to force people out of their homes in order to build several hi-rise luxury complexes that will block Brooklyn's view of the Manhattan skyline.

Their goal is to promote development without ruining the neighborhood feel of their borough.

From their website:

DEVELOP DON'T DESTROY BROOKLYN (DDDB), is a volunteer-run and community-funded 501c3 non-profit corporation. DDDB was founded in February 2004.

DEVELOP DON'T DESTROY BROOKLYN
leads a broad-based community coalition fighting for development that will unite our communities instead of dividing and destroying them. DDDB is opposed to Forest City Ratner's 8 million square foot "Atlantic Yards" development proposal for an arena and 16 high-rises in Prospect Heights and Park Slope, Brooklyn. The $4 billion project would use at least $1.6 billion in public money and would abuse the state's power of eminent domain–taking private property from one owner to give to a private entity for a private use, instead of a public use.

Our coalition consists of 21 community organizations and there are 51 community organizations formally aligned in opposition to the Ratner plan.

DDDB believes that New York City is always about change, but we ask the question: How do we, the people, want that change to occur? We want smart collaboration that creates decentralized, diverse, exciting urbanscapes that New York and Brooklyn can point to with pride. We do not accept the abuse of eminent domain. And we do not want top down, sweetheart mega-deals that give one real estate developer carte blanche.

DDDB supports growth at the MTA's Vanderbilt Rail Yards, with truly affordable housing and career creation; that development must respect the quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods, the well-being of existing businesses, the scale of local architecture and the health of nearby residents. Zoning changes MUST benefit residents, while allowing for new uses. There must be oversight by local officials from community boards to the City Council. And most importantly there must be genuine input from affected communities.

DDDB is fighting the Forest City Ratner plan so that we can have responsible development in our community. We are fighting and will continue to fight in the court of public opinion, political opinion and eventually in the courts of law.

DDDB is a volunteer-run organization. We have over 6,000 subscribers to our email newsletter and 7,000 petition signers. Over 800 volunteers have registered with DDDB to form our various teams, task-forces and committees and we have over 150 block captains. We have a 20 person volunteer legal team of local lawyers supplementing our retained attorneys.

We are funded entirely by individual donations from the community at large and through various fundraising events we and supporters have organized. We have the financial support of well over 4,000 individual donors, with a median donation of $55.
