The AustralianTWO films short-listed for awards this week have something in common: toilet humour. Kenny is a simple comedy about a man who services toilets for a living, and Ten Canoes, a tale of Australia's indigenous past, has lots of references to bodily functions.
Both have been short-listed as best film for the Film Critics Circle of Australia, which announced nominations on Tuesday, and the IF Awards, voted on by the public, which were revealed last night.
Only three people were nominated in both lists for best actor: Abbie Cornish and Heath Ledger, who played the heroin-addicted lovers in Candy, and American actor Laura Linney, from Jindabyne.
In the running for one of the best actor awards are Gigi Edgley and Steve Le Marquand (Last Train to Freo), Victoria Thaine (The Caterpillar Wish), Emily Barclay (Suburban Mayhem), Colin Friels (Solo), Crusoe Kurddal (Ten Canoes), Gabrielle Byrne (Jindabyne) and Shane Jacobson (Kenny).
Candy and Jindabyne received the most nominations by Australian critics, drawing eight each, including for best film.
Suburban Mayhem, about an out-of-control teenager, was the other contender for the IF award for best film - it was not eligible for the critics awards because it will go into cinemas too late for the 2006 assessment. It and Ten Canoes, nominated for best film, scored the most nominations, with six each.
Kokoda, which sold $3.1 million worth of tickets, was only nominated in craft categories.
