AMIDST the high-waisted bubble skirts and elegant gowns there were also a matching pair of "tombstone outfits" paraded down the red carpet tonight, ahead of the 48th Australian Film Industry awards.

The brothers behind the hit mockumentary and AFI multiple award nominated film Kenny joined the stars of Australia's film and television as they filed into the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

"Here's the tombstone outfits," Kenny aka Shane Jacobson said.

"It's great to be here, and we'll steal some cutlery, so we'll get something."

He and Kenny director Clayton Jacobson wore matching dark-coloured suits with string ties, while Melbourne balmy summer's evening saw many of the tuxedo-clad men leave their bow ties at home.

Network Ten's Thank God You're Here compare Shane Bourne was one of those, but he seemed to have a last minute panic when on the red carpet.

"I'm going cas(ual) – does everyone else have a tie on?" he asked reporters.

"Cate Blanchett doesn't have a tie on."

Blanchett looked stunning in a pleated, grecian-style shift with layers of fabric in cream and peach cascading down its front.

Pop starlet Dannii Minogue wore a green form-fitting corset dress, with a fish tail.

RAN: Remote Area Nurse actress Susie Porter wore a tartan dress by Melvin and Doyle.

"It's just a 1950s taffeta french number" she said.

"I thought this was quite unusual, and different, and simple – elegant – and check out the hair!" which was done up in a bow tie-shaped bun.

Deborra-Lee Furness, Jindabyne actress and wife of Hugh Jackman, wore Donna Karan with a diamond necklace by Ian Sharp.

But the bling of the night award had to go to Suburban Mayhem actress Emily Barclay, whose $300,000 necklace was accessorised with a personal security guard.

There also was a red carpet incident, when Heath Ledger greeted Kath and Kim's netball mad friend Sharon Strezlecki (a Magda Szubanski creation) with a lengthy closed-mouth kiss.

Sharon fainted while Ledger later said he bruised his lip. laugh.gif
