Broadcast Critics Can't Quit 'Brokeback'

January 10, 2006

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- News Flash: A group of film critics got together on Monday (Jan. 9) night and gave a ton of awards to "Brokeback Mountain."

In a live awards gala, the Broadcast Film Critics Association presented its best picture prize to Ang Lee's drama about two male cowpokes in love. Lee was named best director and "Brokeback" co-star Michelle Williams split the supporting actress win with Amy Adams of "Junebug."

The ceremony was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and drew a big celebrity crowd as the year's first televised kudos-fest, airing on The WB. Dennis Miller presided over the event, which also saw special honorary baubles presented to George Clooney -- The Freedom Award for illuminating our shared values of freedom, tolerance and democracy with his acclaimed film "Good Night, and Good Luck" -- and to King Kong.

Although "Brokeback Mountain" took home the biggest prizes, it wasn't the night's only multiple winner. "Walk the Line" saw Reese Witherspoon take home best actress and also earned notice for its outstanding soundtrack (not to be confused with its original score, as that win went to John Williams for "Memoirs of a Geisha"). "Crash" was toasted with best ensemble and with a screenplay win for Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco.

Like just about everybody else, the Broadcast Film Critics decided to give their best actor trophy to Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote," which Paul Giamatti won yet another supporting actor category for "Cinderella Man."

"Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" was best animated feature and "March of the Penguins" was best documentary.

Other winners included "Kung Fu Hustle" (best foreign language film), "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" (best comedy), "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" (best family film) and "Into the West" (best movie for television). Freddie Highmore and Dakota Fanning were recognized in the juvenile acting field and "Hustle & Flow" was named the year's best song.
