HUNGRY & VISITING NY???

5 Leaves Photos from Admin's Recent NY Trip

IPB Image

A 5 Leaves postcard is given with every bill.

It's well known by now, at least among the Heath fandom, that Heath was deeply involved in the creation of a new Australian nautical themed grub-pub. By January 2008, the location had been chosen, the licenses obtained, and remodeling plans based on Heath's ideas were being drawn up for the 18 Bedford Avenue location.

Heath had been so excited about this project that his father, Kim, decided to continue to fund the dream, and in September 2008, Heath's friend and partner Jud opened the restaurant on time.

The Five Leaves has thrived since it opened, serving quality Australian and American food, and the place is truly charmed. Its laid-back atmosphere, edgy but comfortable decor, classic music on the turntable, and laughter in the booths are a testament to the the love and careful attention given it by Jud and his wife, Kathy, in honor of a much beloved friend.

When you experience it, you'll know what I mean. It's run with such love and devotion, as if it's a newborn child, now a toddler, being carefully guided into adulthood. And it's gotten so busy, people are lining up at the door.

Although the engravings have now worn off the delicate marble tabletops, Heath has left his indelible mark on this location, the locals who frequent it, and the friends who now own it.

Below are some photos I took while on a recent NY trip.

EXTERIOR SHOTS
In the warmer months, outside tables add over 20 seats to the restaurant's capacity.

THE FOOD

The 5 Leaves Burger is an Aussie burger with organic free-range beef, a fried egg, pineapple, and a beet. I had mine served with a salad, but you can order regular fries or truffle fries.

Pavlova is a wonderful light Australian dessert. But by light, I mean light on the stomach; since it's made of spun sugar and egg much like meringue, it's most likely not light calorie-wise. wink.gif

When were you there, Phyllis? I would love to go to the Five Leaves. Is the table with the chessboard top still there?

Thanks so much hug_002.gif

Linda, I've been there dozens of times since the restaurant opened, but the last time was a couple of weeks ago. I spent 7 days in NY at the end of June right after I graduated.
It is always the highlight of my trips. smile.gif

No, the chessboard is no longer on the table. The tables ARE the same marble tables that the engravings were on. But marble is very soft, and after about 8 months of constant wiping after each customer, the engravings wore off. They say that getting it redone would be very expensive.

well that is a shame sad.gif you know that touch was because of Heath. I have to wonder if that is what he planned. I wonder why they have folding chairs and not regular wooden chairs, kinda like the bar stools

Is Heath's photo still there?

congratulations on graduating. I would love to get up to NY and see the Fiveleaves (and go home again tear.gif )

No, it wasn't planned. They simply didn't realize how porous and soft marble is. They were quite disappointed that the engravings wore off, but decided it wasn't worth it to put them back if they'd just wear off again. If you look really closely on some of the tables, you can stil see tiny scratches of the engravings, but you can't tell what they are.

They went with wooden folding chairs in the beginning because of the casualness, as well as the "nautical/boat" kind of feel. But the wooden chairs are really really rickety. They are strong, but don't feel it.
Then they added the metal folding chairs for the outdoors. All the chairs are old or appear old, and have a rusted look, just like the tables. They specifically didn't want all new shiny stuff.

All those little touches are also Heath's. As are the design style and many of the permanent menu items that he snaked from his favorite restaurants around Manhattan: Devils on Horseback, etc. As well as the chef he snaked from Amy Sacco. LOL (So yes, even the chef knew Heath. wink.gif )

No, that's something Jud put up on the 1st anniversary of Heath's passing. It was special for that day. But normally they're very private.

Thanks so much for the link, Linda. smile.gif

I giggle when they talk about the tattoo'd locals. I dunno if I ever saw many models, but every single person who comes in is inked. Even both owners and all the bartenders.
It's like a pre-requisite if you live in Williamsburg. LOL happy0188.gif
