3rd Annual HeathHeathens Charity Donation in Honor of Heath's Birthday

Sunday, 21 March 2010
by Phyllis, HH Admin

Since 2008, HH has donated annually to a charity that was close to Heath's heart. This year, we have chosen the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia.

Heath was born at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Subiaco, which now focuses solely on newborn health and difficult pregnancies. It's sister hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital for Children focuses on treating sick children, especially those with cancer and respiratory illnesses. Often upon visits home, Heath would anonymously visit cancer wards to cheer the sick children.

PMH is WA’s only specialist children’s hospital and treats around twenty thousand children and teenagers every year from isolated and rural areas as well as cities and towns. Because of this, HH feels that the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children is the perfect place to donate this year In Memory of Heath.

Unlike other years, this year HH is asking you to make your donation yourself. There are two ways to donate:
  1. ONLINE via Credit Card.
  2. Via CHECK/CHEQUE by mailing your donation in.
If you would like to donate, I have attached links & directions below.

TO DONATE ONLINE (Using your Credit Card): CLICK THIS LINK.
In the space for ORGANIZATION, please put HeathHeathens.com or HeathHeathens.net.

In the space for REASON FOR DONATION: use the pull-down menu and choose "Other (Please Specify)". You will be given a new line to specify your reason, and you can put IN MEMORY OF HEATH LEDGER.

Thanks Phyllis. Two questions: When I click on the cheque link I go to an adobe site? 2nd is how long can we donate? Is it up until April 4th? Thanks. smile.gif
Naomi
Donated. Thanks so much for organising this Phyllis, you've done a great job and found such an appropriate charity for us to do this.

I am so excited about this! I know Heath did so many things that weren't publicized because he didn't want the acclaimations. I also know children were so close to his heart (remembering him playing video games with the little girl from The Patriot and later on his relationship with Matilda). I just know that this a a perfect choice for us to honor him. This keeps a lasting legacy alive.

YES, it takes you to ACROBAT.com, wait till it loads, and the document will appear. You can download it from there. smile.gif (I just needed to change a permission so it would load for you. Sorry about that.) The link will work for you now.

Well, April 4th is Heath's birthday. So it would be great if we could all send our donations really close together, from now till April 4th. That way, they'd really be noticed if a bunch of Heath Ledger donations came in within a 2 week time frame.

However, with these links, you can continue to donate throughout the entire year, if you want.

When Heath would go home to visit Perth, he used to dress up like a clown or mime and go anonymously to the Children's Cancer wards to entertain. It was never in the press, because he did not tell them. Nobody knew it was him except the administrators of the hospital ward. smile.gif These are the kinds of things that the public never knew about him. And one way he was so special.

Thanks, Ing. I feel very good about this decision. I feel this is a good place for our donations to go.

Thank you all for donating. And Thank you Naomi for reminding me this year. hug_002.gif

You're welcome. I really feel good about choosing this hospital.
Thank you, Pat. I too will be donating on April 3rd. (I'm gonna be a couple weeks late getting my car tags, so I can donate here. LOL)

btw: I've been thinking about you. glomp.gif

Did I miss the video the first time or did you add it??? I just watched it and it just reaffirms my commitment and feeling that this was a good choice. In light of hearing Heath, in his own words, describe how he intended to spend his time and resources on charity-and knowing he just didn't have the time to fulfill his desire-I feel it is so important that we pick up the torch for him. The sincerity and humility in his eyes as he spoke of his work at the hospital just shows that Heath was such an extraordinary man.

I moved it from another thread the day after I posted this. wink.gif I remember when he said that. In the beginning, where he says "It's not my campaign..." He's talking about a question he just got asked about HeathBaby. Ally had the ONE.org banner in the corner of HB's splash page, just like HH has on our portal page now, and Heath was asked about if that was his campaign. At the time, he and Michelle had not yet done the ONE campaign. Who knows, that may be the question that caused him to look it up. LOL

He was extraordinary. So much more than people realize.

This is definitely a perfect cause! I just made a small donation - since that's all I can afford right now. But I'm planning to make another small donation in a week or so... And it was really easy too! Thanks so much Phyllis for finding this for us! hug_002.gif

Thank you, Rosa! smile.gif

Remember everyone, you don't have to donate exactly on the 4th. You can donate any time and dedicate it to Heath.

I hope there has been a good response; I really think this is the perfect cause and really means something.
Naomi
Yay biggrin.gif it feels so nice to pull together and do something positive on what is a bittersweet day for most Heath fans. Thanks again for organising this Phyllis, it does mean so much to do this, as you say.

xx

What a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate and honor Heath's birthday. Thank you, Phyllis, for organizing it. I hope we can keep doing something similar for years and years to come. I made my donation just in the last hours of April 4 (at least the last hours down there in Perth).

Thank you so much, Frank. That's wonderful. I'm so grateful that all of you wanted to do this.

I did want to point out that when you donate, it does it in AU dollars, so you might want to look at a currency converter first. I use http://www.xe.com/.

And REMEMBER: Just because the 4th is past, does not mean we cannot donate all through April, or anytime we want and still dedicate it to Heath. smile.gif

Got a letter from the Princess Margaret Children Foundation today with a note to say thank you for honouring Heath's life with a donation. I imagine they are sending them out to us all? Was really nice for them to take the time to write back and to mention Heath. It feels good that its recognised on his behalf. xx

How far away are you from Perth? I wonder how long it will take everyone to get a letter. smile.gif

I got a letter from them, too, with a lovely hand-written note - very uplifting smile.gif

Today I have received the letter from Perth, too, over here in Germany. With the lovely hand-written addition by the foundation's Donor Relations co-ordinator: "Thank you for honoring Heath's life with this donation".

I love it, when people see, that Heath's life still makes a difference, even now, after his passing.

I donated a bit later than some of you, because I had to wait till I had the $$, but I'm excited to hear about the letters.

Thank you all who donated. (And Mel, you're welcome. You know I did quite a bit of research to find the right charity fit, and find the easiest way for y'all to be able to donate.) Remember, you can use those links any time . . . and continue to honor Heath's life this way anytime you feel a need.

Thank you all again. I'm so happy that this hospital was our choice.

I got my letter. It was just a form letter. Didn't mention that my donation was for Heath at all, only said: "Thank you for choosing to give in your time of grief in remembrance of your loved one."
Nothing handwritten.

I was a little disappointed that they did not acknowledge that the donation was in honor of Heath, but that's ok. I think this will be the charity that HH will continue to donate to annually.

What do y'all think? You want to keep this one on permanent? Or switch back and forth between this one and The David Wirrpanda Foundation?
BrooklynBabe
Waiting for my letter..... sad.gif Just kidding. It felt so good giving.
You know Phyllis, you ask whether we should go back and forth with the places to donate to. I'm still scratching my head over that one. Both the David Wirrpanda Foundation and the Princess Margaret Childrens Foundation are such good and worthy causes....and Heath's causes. I'll have to think about that. I wish I could always support both! smile.gif

I know. I'd like to, as well...

And you know . . . something that says so much about Heath, both these organizations are designed to help children.
Mel
I received my letter today, it was also handwritten. That was very nice of them. A Children's hospital save my sons life so I will always be partial to staying with a hospital or anything to do with children really.

That was nice of them to send you a handwritten one.

It makes sense that you would feel drawn to helping children's hospitals. glomp.gif

Still waiting on my letter. I think both charities are fabulous choices. The one thing I always research is how much other funding a charity gets, for example, if the Australian gov't supports the hospital heavily as part of its health care funding, but David's Foundation is a non-profit that relies solely on fundraising and donations-I would lean towards David's Foundation. However, if he is heavily funded by businesses, gov't grants, etc. I would lean back towards the hospital. I know, right now in the US, non-profit organizations are really struggling to stay afloat. Many are having to cut staff, services etc. If any of you have a passion for a cause I am sure they would love your help. I recently found out that many non-profits have things you can do to help them right at home, on your computer.

Hello Heathens! hug_002.gif

Do we do a conjoint donation this year, too? April 4 is coming soon...
BrooklynBabe
I believe I set mine up to be an auto annual withdrawal...unless we change the chairty. I'll have to check my bank balance to see if something was passed through. I'm ready to give again. smile.gif

I know we didn't get as organized this year as we have in the past but I encourage every one to donate or show some support to an organization/charity in honor of Heath. In the past we donated to David Wirrpanda's organization and to the Children's Hospital. There are several organizations/charities that Heath supported that can be found on this site. I made a small donation to a local charity that supports arts education and opportunities for children who would not otherwise be able to afford it. I know it wasn't a particular charity that he endorsed by name but I just know Heath would like for promising kids to get a break.
Not to ramble-lol but I just feel better knowing I am doing something to honor and celebrate him.
Phyllis
Hey everyone.
I know we didn't get it organized in time this year, and I'm so sorry.
I've had multiple computer problems the last few months, and am having to send my laptop to Dell's tech support.

But if you would like to send a donation somewhere and haven't yet, I encourage you to send one to the Princess Margaret Children's Hospital in Perth. It is the sister hospital of the King Edward Memorial Hospital (where Heath was born), and its primary function is children's illnesses, respiratory, cancer, etc... and treats over 20,000 children a year.

Use the links and/or form above.

Or you can donate to the David Wirrpanda Foundation, which helps Aboriginal youth get the proper education and community support to help them get a good start in their life and careers.

If you would like us to go ahead and do a full-on campaign, even though we've started late, I am currently working on a very special organization... or you can just donate to one of the above, and we'll do this organization either this Christmas or Heath's next birthday, April 2012.
