Terry Gilliam's latest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, an homage to friend and actor Heath Ledger, opened across the United States on January 8th, 2010. After having a limited run in Los Angeles & New York beginning Christmas, and having opened widely across Europe and in Australia, Ledger's final starring role was seen in 607 theatres by an average of 507thousand (507,000) people.
In spite of opening on only 607 screens nationwide, over 50 more screens than originally expected, and competing against hugely backed films that opened in 2,000 to 3,500 screens, Parnassus was able to open respectably at #11 at the boxoffice.
In week 2, the film slipped to number 14, remaining in the top 20 on just 599 screens.
To date (19 January 2010), Parnassus has garnered over $5,068,329 in it's first 2 weeks wide in the United States and $32,800,000 in foreign boxoffice.
Parnassus can be seen in your local theatres. See it this weekend at a theatre near you.
