Oscar Look-Alikes

The wheels are spinning fast, and Oscar knockoffs are already being turned out.

The Web site www.edressme.com offers three gowns: a floral-embellished interpretation of Reese Witherspoon’s vintage Dior; a golden chiffon version of Michelle Williams’ dress; and Salma Hayek’s stunning blue zinger in a pleated satinlike fabric. They cost $275 to $350.

NPD, which tracks sales, estimates the knockoff business at $300 million.

Marshal Cohen, chief NPD retail analyst, said that about 100 companies are making replicas, up from maybe a dozen three years ago. The best-known is ABS, where executive Allen Schwartz has a team in place to choose fabrics immediately after the awards. Dresses made by the California company will reach stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Nordstrom by May.
