Yesterday afternoon (Tues, November 7th), Heath Ledger made the long trek from his cozy home in Brooklyn, which he shares with the pixieish Michelle Williams and their one-year-old daughter Matilda, to the W in Union Square. He was there to promote his new indie Aussie flick Candy costarring newcomer Abbie Cornish who is quickly becoming infamous for being the wrench in Reese and Ryan's relationship. The film is based on the novel by Luke Davies about a young art student (Cornish) and her sometimes poet boyfriend (Ledger) who are addicted to each other as well as heroin.
Heath began the discussion saying the topic of drug addiction -- especially heroin -- has been glorified in the past and overexposed through literature, film and music so that we all should be able to act like junkies. I then asked him why he chose to participate in yet another movie doing just that and he said his main motivation for doing the film was the fact that it took place in his home continent of Australia. That kind of laid back do-what-you-want-when-you-feel-like-it attitude came across throughout the entire interview.
He said later that he lets things fall in his lap and then decides what he can and can't do, but that he doesn't seek our certain roles, and said that he is rarely affected by a role past the point when they call cut. "I'm the first one off the set at night and when the film wraps I don't think about it anymore."
He also talked about his upcoming role as the Joker in the next Batman movie, and someone asked him if he'd ever had the urge to play a superhero and he kindly said, "It's just the tights and the undies and the boots... I would just feel stupid and silly and I couldn't pull it off. There are other people who can and do a wonderful job at it but I just couldn't take myself seriously." So cute!
He also reassured us that any rumors circulating regarding he and Michelle moving out of Brooklyn are not true. Heath said they are very happy there, and can live fairly private lives. Though was a photographer following them the other day, as Heath put it he "slaughtered him with kindness." He, Michelle and Matilda were in a flower store when they spotted him and Heath said he grabbed a flower, ran out in the street and gave the camera man the flower and said "'If I give you this flower with you please please please not take a photo of our daughter ?' He didn't want to take it but eventually he took the flower and put his camera away and jumped in his car and left us, which was really nice of him." Sure the photog didn't get the photo he needed, but he needs to prioritize! I would take a flower from Heath any day!
Candy will open next Friday the 17th at the Angelika Film Center and in wider markets on Dec. 1st. I've included two pics from the movie. The second is Heath with costar and fellow Aussie Abbie Cornish who he describes as "explosive and down to earth."
