(AAP) A CAREFULLY positioned sock down her trousers helped Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett embody Bob Dylan in her latest film.

Blanchett, who is one of six actors to portray the music legend in the Todd Haynes biopic I'm Not There, said the imitation penis helped her feel more like a man.

"My friend put a sock down my trousers and that kind of helped me walk like a man," Blanchett told Bang! Showbiz.

But the glamorous Australian star said her new look wasn't a hit with her husband, writer Andrew Upton.

"My husband Andrew wouldn't come near me," she said.

"He was utterly repulsed by it."

Blanchett has previously revealed she also flattened her breasts for the role.

"I had to strap those breasts down and just go for it," she said.

Blanchett plays Dylan in the early 1960s when he was widely reviled for rejecting folk styles in favour of electric guitars and became increasingly withdrawn and cryptic.

The 38-year-old won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month for her turn as Dylan, and has been tipped to pick up a fourth Academy Award nomination.

I'm Not There will be released in Australia in December.
